rhythms are learner from people and place,
natural elements and human activities are celebrated,
weymouth is animated with light and delight once more
Weymouth Promenade is rejuvenated through a new lighting scheme that celebrates and amplifies the people’s activities and the ever changing weather in the evening’s lighting with a series of scenes that tell stories about the people and place. Mounted to existing columns, the seamless led fittings are visually unobtrusive in daylight whilst coming to life at night and bringing delight to the Promenade.
The scheme is simple in conception yet technically innovative in realisation. 6m high led media tubes are retrofitted to 28 existing highway lighting columns that stretch over 1km along the Promenade. The lighting tubes are wirelessly controlled, testing the limits of contemporary lighting control technology. Each 6m length has 30 discrete programmable ‘pixels’, 200mm in length, together they display an abstract representation of the rhythms and rituals of Weymouth. The lights will bring delight to the seafront, taking the form of the sparkling golden sands, a gently blowing breeze, or people joyfully running.
Programmed using an astronomical clock, the lights will turn on for 30 minutes each day in time with the rising and setting of the sun. In the evening, the lights remain on until 11:30pm in the winter and 1am in the summer, cycling through 10 unique scenes that celebrate the elements and activities of Weymouth, with gentle ambient scenes played in-between.
