Rain Bow Gate Wins RIBA Award

Rain Bow Gate has been selected as one of the winners of this year's prestigous RIBA Awards.
The project is just a stone's throw away from another of our RIBA award winning projects, the Singing Ringing Tree. The judges commented that "one can only hope the authorities in Burnley will continue their wonderful patronage of the art of architecture with these thoughtful and inventive designers." This is the 6th RIBA Award for Tonkin Liu in the past ten years, which cements the practice's position in the listings of Britain's Best Architects.

Prototyping Architecture Conference

Tonkin Liu is presenting Shell Lace at this year's Prototyping Architecture Conference hosted by the Building Centre. Shell Lace is an innovative single surface structural system being developed by Tonkin Liu and Arup.

Kingston Market Stalls

We recently won the competition to redesign Kingston Ancient Market stalls, following on from our appointment to redesign the public realm, lighting and street furniture in the historic centre of Kingston-Upon-Thames. The design for the new market stalls is progressing quickly. We are exploring perforated cross laminated timber panels which will transform the closed stalls into a glowing orchard in the evening.

This ultra-thin pendant light has been designed and developed in collaboration with 3D-printers Chalk Studio. We are exploring a means by which to make the fitting in ultra-light mulched paper, like egg crate packaging.

Baku Sfera is an observatory made entirely of glass. The complex geometries are formed through a simple offset layering technique, creating stairways, floors, and structural ribs. A model of the structure has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Show in London.
